Welcome to Bytes of Australian History – Looking for the Land Down Under
The aim of this blog is to first share a journey of discovery across the Pacific and Indian Oceans towards Australia.
My plan is to involve as many threads and people in our journey as we can. The first part of our story is not as simple as the Voyages of Captain Cook in the 18th Century and his eventual landing at Botany Bay. Not by a long shot. It is far more complex and, hopefully, far more interesting.
We will undertake this journey in small bytes, sequentially, starting from the first rumors of this mysterious Great Southern Land.
When we finally reach this Terra Australis, we will delve into its colonization: talk of the people who were transported half way around the world, exiled to the oldest continent on earth, some for nothing more than stealing a loaf of bread. We will explore their impact on the local aboriginals, and then cover the development and challenges of this new nation as it evolves over time.
So let’s get going. When did this journey begin? Well, let’s start with the first hint that there was (or should be) a Great Southern Land…
For those new to this blog, I suggest you take the first byte…
Note for Indigenous Australians
In accordance with traditional practices often followed by Indigenous communities in Australia the mentioning of and photographs of deceased people may offend. Please note on this blog there may be mention of or images of Aboriginal people who are deceased.
And thanks to Wikipedia Commons for many of the photos…
